Get To Know Markland Wood

For Neighbourhood Explorers

Over the past decade or so, certain Etobicoke communities have exploded in popularity, drawing in buyers from across Toronto and beyond. However, other neighbourhoods have continued to fly under the radar, even though they’re just as great (if not better) than some of the trendy ones.

Markland Wood is a prime example of this. It’s a peaceful, down-to-earth community surrounded by some of the best nature in the city. Plus, it has all the standard features of a great neighbourhood, like quality homes, good schools, and easy access to amenities. Yet, Markland Wood remains pretty underrated for the most part.

As a local Etobicoke Realtor, I’m a big fan of Markland Wood – and I think you will be too! In this blog post, I’m going to share what makes this community stand out and what you should know if you’re interested in buying here.

Where is Markland Wood?

A huge part of Markland Wood’s appeal is its location. So where exactly is it?

On the map, Markland Wood is essentially right on the border between Etobicoke and Mississauga. To be more specific, it sits just west of the 427, a short distance from Dundas Street West, reaching Burnhamthorpe Road to the north. Fun fact, Markland Wood is actually Toronto’s westernmost community, as the Etobicoke Creek (Toronto’s official edge) runs right beside it.

This unique location makes living in Markland Wood super convenient, with all the amenities of both Toronto and Mississauga right at your doorstep. Plus, you’re directly connected to major highways, a short drive to transit hubs, and less than 15 minutes from Toronto Pearson International Airport.

It’s rare to find this type of connectivity in a neighbourhood that still feels secluded and suburban, but that’s exactly what Markland Wood provides.

Markland Wood’s Roots

Another interesting aspect of Markland Wood is its history, which has played an influential role in the community spirit right up to the present day.

Before it became a neighbourhood, the area where Markland Wood sits today was mostly farmland. In 1960, developer Marc Cavotti purchased about 400 acres of this land, noticing its unique location between two growing cities: Etobicoke (then an independent municipality) and Mississauga. Homes began sprouting up in the area soon after, and by 1967, Markland Wood was mostly finished.

As the neighbourhood began to take shape, in the planning stage, it was discovered that certain areas were at too high a risk of flooding to build homes. This led to the creation of the Markland Wood Golf Club, which is a community staple to this day.

Strength in Community

During Markland Wood’s growth, one thing became deeply important to local residents – community. Just 2 years after the first homes were built, the neighbourhood formed an HOA and launched its local newspaper, The Marklander, which remains the oldest, continuously running, community newspaper in Toronto.

Endless Parks & Green Spaces

Toronto is often called “a city within a park”, and that idea really holds true in Markland Wood. If you love spending time outdoors (in any season), this could be the perfect place for you.

First and foremost, the lush Etobicoke Creek Valley passes right through Markland Wood. On top of adding to the community’s scenic feel, it’s also a gateway to the incredible Etobicoke Creek Trail, which stretches from Lake Ontario up to Caledon and is perfect for long bike rides.

There’s also Bloordale Parks North and South, which offer tennis courts, walking trails, playgrounds, and other amenities for residents. If you really want to get lost in nature, the Centennial Park Conservatory is only a few minutes’ drive away. Centennial Park offers another separate golf course to the Markland Wood Course as well as an Olympic sized swimming pool, a sports stadium, soccer fields and baseball diamonds.
